2003-2004 Graffiti Art

During my high school years in Delia International, most students were from Philippine or Indonesia. Hip Hop culture was a popular trend by then. This gallery included some graffiti art pieces that was drawn by my friends as a gift to me. I love collecting their art work as it shows a lot of character and personality in them. Inspired by my schoolmates I also attempted to design and create my own graffiti. Here you can see my ridiculous attempts here.

A Gift from Val

Drawn by Val (Can't even remember her full name, and I always mispronounced her name.)

Drawn in 2003

This is the first graffiti gift I ever received from a beautiful Indianian girl. She has a beautiful sexy vocal voice and she sings whenever she's happy. I was curious about their culture and she taught me about graffiti. She said the secret of this art is to express yourself within the text, you can do whatever you want with it and be creative.

Her wiggling texts seems like dancing and her use of colour is very bright and bold. I can see her charisma coming through it completely.

A Gift From Leo---Drawing my name out

Drawn in 12th May,2003

Ink on school books.

Leo is a very talented Indonesian artist, he is good at everything: sports, maths and charming the ladies. One day I asked him to create a graffiti for me and he happily took the task. The next day he gave me this beautiful work having my name on it. He was also very proud of it and showed around to impress the ladies. The day after another girl asked him about it and wanted to take a look but I already sticked it in my notebook (which I didn't bring it school very often.). I was so pleased and treasure it until today. :)  Too sad I lost contact with all my high school friends or I would love to keep in touch with them.

Break Dance Graffiti

Drawn on 14th May,2003

Markers and Ink Pen

Just trying to imitate the hip hop trend by then and make up something with the movement of break dance. I find it very interesting how graffiti artists usually combine letters and place them upside down to indicate hidden messages or showing identity of a person in a specific area.

On Fire!~
Drawn in 29th April, 2003.

Just another imitation of graffiti art I saw in the streets. My schoolmates usually do that on their art, adding fire or melting text with drippings. Text blend with the content they are trying to express.
Mid-Autumn's Festival

Drawn in 14th Jan,2004

This is an attempt to use Chinese characters to create graffiti. Although Chinese characters are meant to be drawn when they were created. It doesn't seem to be fitting the graffiti role as I expected. By the time I created this was actually Chinese New Year, I made a mid-autumn festival graffiti instead. :)
