Pencil color on vellum sheets with machine printings and balloons
paper size: 24'x36'

At first I wanted the concept to be about industrial psychopaths, so I planned to make the little girl wear a business suit. Reason being that I think everyone has a little psychopathic traits of which one of them is getting bored easily. However from such a foreshortened view, it is impossible to tell what she is wearing. So I decided to leave her simply wearing a red dress.

The printings of "boredom" creates a smoggy or cloudy feeling. I made her eyes blurry so the viewer feels dizzy by watching them, impressing the feeling of falling on to the viewer.

But anyway, I've tried my best already! And I should forgive myself if I don't get a satisfactory mark for this.

Boredom

Normally a child would carry a balloon and it would be a desire for happiness. But now the balloon is tied to her feet and floating her in midair through layers of boredom. What creates boredom?
People always interpret boredom according to a mood, doing routine or repeating things, disappointment on not achieving their desires, or just being lazy and lacking imaginative creativity. Boredom creates desire to get rid of it, and desires create boredom. Thus becoming a vicious cycle.
In this work, the balloons represent her desires that she could achieve and they are lifting her life up, some of them are dark desires and some of them are brighter. Her desires are taking control of her but she is still being stuck in boredom. The only way to get rid of boredom is to live with it in peace, and then you would be free from your desires and boredom.

An assignment about social response for Liza's drawing class. These photos were taken when it was first made. I was disappointed by the final version when I presented to the class. Some of the balloons were deflated and I had to trim the drawing to lose some weight. Eventually I lost some of my balloons while transporting the work and hence there were insufficient balloons to hang the work in mid air. So I had to hang it from the ceiling.
