Collages

Made in Oct 4-6,08.

Using images from National Geographic magazine, I daringly tore out pages and created a beautiful collage.

I really love the faded out colors from the images giving that warm and worn off feel that felt so close to my heart.

Dreams & Goals

Made in Oct,08
Cut out images from National Geographic in the 1975.

In that article which I cut out images from is about China Town in the States, how the Chinese in a foreign place live 30+ years ago.
I name it Dreams & Goals because Chinese left their homeland with political or financial reasons. The Kung Fu guy in the front is like punching through poverty(which I use a little girl sitting next to a sawing machine in a factory to symbolize it.).
From the top left corner you can see how an ideal childhood could be like heaven, and as your eyes move across the images you can let a story of a life (or a Chinese) could be.

The Chinese boy in brown suit is a picture taken in his graduation. He's preparing to get into the society and had great expectations for his future. Next to him is an image of a Chinese girl leading a group of elders as a tourist guide, a symbol of youth influencing the society by leading the traditional wisdom into a modern ways.

There is a lot of contrast of reality and idealistic living.
On the right bottom corner you can see an elder in bed, he looks like dying but the bright colors make it look cheerful instead of sad. He's lucky he has someone to love or take care of him, while on the top left corner an Chinese elder is having his meal alone and live as a loner.

There is only one image that I made an exception that may not came from the same magazine (maybe a more recent version). It is the one with a bunch of solders lined up on the field, and there's a woman lie in front of them. This is an image taken from a military training, the woman fainted under the hot summer sun, so they just let her laid in front of the line and left her alone instead of bringing her to a shelter and take care of her.Sometimes I feel like my life is being in a military training, and especially being a woman in this society would be left alone if one could not stand the brutal environment. In contrast to that image I put two guys recording music in a studio room and having fun together. It represents unity and a harmonious environment. This is an idealistic image that I would like to experience, but so far I still have a long way to go before I could enter that room.

Wars & Souls

Made in Oct,08
Cut out images from National Geographic in the 1900s.

I made this collage before the Dreams and Goals one.
You can see there are a lot of structures that were built for military and religious use. Then there are some deep sea animals and they have a strong shield that is used to protect themselves. The concept is to show that we are born to have an ability to fight or protect ourselves, and even in nature you can see those personality traits. While on the other hand we pray for forgiveness, we keep doing things to tough up ourselves. I am just being sarcastic here to point out the two and mix them together. Compare to Dreams & Goals, this one is more violent than the other.
