Productive Garden & Cookhouse Design Brief
April 2012 â€‹
Created in Northumbria University

The Cookhouse Project is one of the buildings to place in the Productive Garden.

The design requirement is to redesign this self-sustainable garden to bring it back to its former glory before WW2.
The main theme of the garden is to connect to nature and explore it’s various changes.
The garden is shaped in organic forms, leaving the visitor’s imagination to create their own experience.
The Cookhouse would serve as a medium to get close to nature and the historical scenes. Visitors could experience that connection through cookery and food. Produce from the nearby brewery and vegetables would be served in the restaurant. The fishpond gives the visitors an opportunity to observe the local natural life. Part of the south wall would be knocked down allowing wild animals such as horses to approach the fishpond easily. The restaurant has a full floor glass viewing south to the entire wilderness and the ever-changing scene.

The ground floor hallway is illuminated by a series of light well that slowly increases in size. Coupled with the cascading waterfall at the East of the building, It sets the atmosphere of mystery and also helps to lighten the mood of the visitor before entering the restaurant on the first floor.

A large glass panel installed in the roof allows natural light into the restaurant thus minimising the need for artificial light. The facade of the building, not shown in this series of picture, is made up of glass panels too. This allow the visitors and diners to take in the natural view of the surrounding while enjoying their activity.

Final Concept Model

The previous model is abandoned due to the relative size and technical issues involved with the construction. However, the glass facade is reused in this final concept model.
