Wall Mural for PDA

Created in Aug - Sept, 2015

This mural project was assigned by Ms Chan, the founder and director of PDA (short for Potential Development Association Ltd.)*.

This mural is to be placed above the sofa, which would catch visitors’ attention and leave them a lasting impression of the lobby.

This project was supposed to be completed within a month and within a budget of HK$1000.

The theme is about Hope & Happiness, and the intention is to bring those feelings to the visitors who come to PDA.

I designed this image under the supervison of Mr Lam.

Before I drew the initial sketch, we needed to figure out what elements are related to the theme and topic.

After some development from the themes of “Hope” & “Happiness”, we generated some ideas on the elements that would convey those themes and associate them to personal growth.

The following content is our first proposal for a PDA wall mural.

Methods

We have come up with several ideas and options for our client to choose from.

Method A is just a beautiful mural without adding much text into it. It would be easy and fast to complete without considering other additional content.

Method B & C would be good if we are allow comments and feedbacks form parents and students to be added, which we would need further acknowledgement on the feasibility.

These are the initial sketches for the mural image. I actually got inspiration from a seaweed snack package and a picture that was originally present in the front desk.

The concept is to have those texts , comments, process & feedbacks written above the plant along the radial sections.

The sections would contain elements that assisted with the growth of the plant.

Option 1

Original concept. Plant grows and glows from the ground.

This is my initial concept and first drawing of this series.

Option 2

Grass line is lower. More white space at the background.

Option 3

Image same as Option 2 except the darker brushes on the grass.

Option 4

Plant proportion is smaller in the whole picture.

More space for text and images above the plant.

After the first proposal, Ms Chan seemed pretty satisfied with the design. She also thought that the image itself alone is attractive enough without the frames. It would be a shame to hide that image with those frames.

Therefore we came up with another proposal to use one wall to display the image she favoured, and used a different large wall to be the official area for frame and artwork display. With a tree as the background and the fruits as the frame, this one seems to fit in more comfortably with the background.

While everything was going smooth and ready. Ms Ann suddenly postponed and suspended the plan and lost interest in it. So Mr Lam and I kept those beautiful pictures and considered the experience to be good practise.
