Print Making Assignment
Created on 4th Oct, 2005
This was an art assignment I made during my studies in Yorkland High School. Although it was a very short period of time I stayed in that school, it gives me an overall impression of how a private school in Toronto looks like.
The print was to cut or carve on a very trough plastic carving board to show some character using our own names. After reading the novel Angels & Demons, I was inspired by the Illuminati double sided logo and desided to design my own. It wasn't as difficult as it mentioned in the book and after creating the first one I realised I can create many double sided text logos using the same design techniques.
And since I was being silly and didn't position my hand properly during the carving process, I cut my hand and my teacher allowed me to use scissors instead of a carving knife. Saving me a lot of labour and time to cut out the unused spaces in between the logo and the decorations. My schoolmates thought that was cheating cause the rest of them had to carve that tough board like hell ......but the cut I had was pretty deep and my hand could never recover as flexible as before if I streach them wide.
Carving Board
This is the original board before print. The font design is inspired by the word design in Angels and Demons.
You can read my name upside down on it. Because of my stupid attempt, I cut myself by using my left hand in a wrong position, which is actually stronger than but not as flexible as the right one. In the end my art teacher told me to use scissors instead.
Which some students think it was unfair to them cause they have to craft all that blank space out by a small knife.

Carving Board After Print
This is the carving board after being used, it still looks colourful and has it's own kind of flavour.

Two-colour rolling print
In this double colour printing test, I picked red and blue as they are contrasting colours which represent my double sided character.
Looking back at this I found I fell in love with the simplicity and favoured this two colour print more than my tri-colour prints.

Tricolour print
Below is a test print of my art piece. I picked the primary colours red, yellow and blue to create a beautiful logo.
The paint blend into each other and the gradient colours that come between them creates a wonderful rainbow.
I really wished I could control the spread of inl more even, but as you can see from the below image that if I added more ink it would only overflow the carving board and couldn't see the print clearly at all.

Final print
We need to pick one of our best works to be the final submittion work. Although I wasn't too satisfied with the uneven ink spread. I decided this piece should be the one I submitted and be marked.

Graphic Analysis
This piece kept me mesmerised as the composition was very beautiful and could be viewed from both sides.

Simplified Logo
It could be simplified into a very simple logo and you can see the result as below.
